02. FP&A SALES PIPELINE FORECAST · CASE STUDY

Beyond the weighted pipeline

Assessing quarterly forecast reliability, deal dependencies and the opportunities requiring management attention.

A probability weighted sales pipeline gives Finance a starting forecast. It can also conceal a heavy reliance on one deal, optimistic win probabilities or delivery dates that leave little room for delay.

I developed this project during the AI Finance Accelerator to explore those risks and give FP&A a clearer basis for challenging the forecast. It combines a Python analysis workflow with an interactive Q4 2026 dashboard for Fuchsia Works, a demonstration digital consultancy.

01The business question

How dependable is the Q4 forecast, what could prevent delivery, and which opportunities need management attention first?

The dashboard brings forecast composition, probability assumptions, delivery timing and currency exposure into one view. It is designed to support discussions about the underlying opportunities and the actions needed to deliver revenue.

  • How much of the forecast depends on the largest opportunities?
  • How do assigned win probabilities compare with supplied historical stage rates?
  • How much revenue could move out of Q4 if delivery slips?
  • Which owners and opportunities should be prioritised for review?

02What I built

The dashboard has seven sections: executive summary, forecast composition, forecast reliability, forecast risks, FX sensitivity, management action and assumptions.

  • Gross, probability weighted and standard weighted forecasts, with Q4 delivery phasing.
  • Monte Carlo outcome distributions and cumulative monthly ranges, with selectable display intervals.
  • Concentration measures, a forecast risk waterfall and an interactive deal dependency wheel.
  • Currency sensitivity scenarios and opportunity watchlists with named owners.
  • Visible assumptions, calculation inputs, CSV exports and a print / PDF option.

The HTML contains a prepared snapshot of the data and simulation results. Visitors can explore the output without uploading a workbook; changing the displayed interval does not rerun the Python model.

03The project workflow

  1. Define the forecasting question, reporting requirements and presentation style.
  2. Prepare and validate the Salesforce-style source data.
  3. Apply the ECB FX lookup to report the pipeline in EUR.
  4. Allocate revenue across delivery working days and calculate the weighted Q4 forecasts.
  5. Model win outcomes and delivery slippage, then build the dashboard and risk watchlists.
  6. Review the reconciliations, assumptions and outputs before management interpretation.

The Python workflow generates the dashboard from a prepared workbook. The case study explains the approach, while the interactive demonstration lets visitors explore the results.

04Forecast method and controls

The model blends assigned win probabilities with supplied historical stage win rates. It simulates whether each opportunity is won and whether delivery slips, then recalculates the revenue retained within Q4. This produces a range of outcomes under the stated assumptions.

Source forecast measures and model expectations remain separately identifiable. The dashboard exposes opportunity inputs, reconciliation checks, FX rates and the rules behind its risk classifications.

The confidence score is a heuristic risk index. It is separate from the modelled probability of reaching the weighted forecast.

Sales owners still need to confirm commercial facts and delivery dates. FP&A challenges the assumptions and reconciles the financial output; leadership decides the management response.

05My contribution and AI support

I defined the finance requirements, calculation logic, reporting structure and management questions. I used AI to support Python development, troubleshooting and dashboard iteration, reviewing the resulting outputs from an FP&A and finance systems perspective.

The project demonstrates how I translate a finance process into repeatable analysis and an accessible management view. The dashboard makes the calculation inputs, assumptions and outputs visible for review.

06Assumptions and limitations

  • Deals are modelled independently, so shared customer, market or delivery shocks may be understated.
  • The supplied historical win rates have no supporting closed-deal sample or backtest attached.
  • The probability blend, delay scenario and risk thresholds are modelling choices.
  • Simulation ranges describe outcomes under those assumptions; they are not validated guarantees of forecast accuracy.
  • FX scenarios hold local revenue and win probabilities fixed and exclude hedging.
  • The dashboard is a static snapshot, with no live CRM connection, access controls or integrated action tracking.

This is a portfolio demonstration and applied-learning project. Productivity benefits and improvements in forecast accuracy have not been measured in a production implementation.

07Next development

After the course, I plan to refine the prototype, test it against historical outcomes and explore correlated deal scenarios. Further work could include sensitivity testing of the probability blend and slippage assumptions, usability improvements and a more automated preparation workflow.
